As the party was leaving the dungeon, Villitch disappeared in the blink of an eye just before they found the body of the chimera they had driven away earlier, apparently returned but now laying dead. Standing proudly by his kill was an Elf Rogue named Akram who had followed them here from Pelifree to warn them that Meddevin could not be trusted.
According to the Elf, the urn Meddevin had sent them to find in the dungeon belonged to a Lich named Bahrentoht who had formerly been an arch-villain Necromancer slain by Sir Adam a hundred years ago, cementing the Church of Deem’s claim to rule. Ignominiously, in the history they teach, he is known only as The Necromancer and the name has been forgotten to the point where only an Elf who was around a hundred years ago recognizes it as the same name that today graces the Office of the King’s Steward.
In a bitter irony, it would seem that Bahrentoht the Necromancer had his revenge on the theocracy by becoming the power behind the Holy throne after achieving Undead status as a Lich.
Whatever dangers they had faced thus far, worse was surely in store and the adventurers were without their best fighter. They opted to return to their original map-quest for the Crown of Kings, after a short vacation in Clamorine, home skyland of Gilbert.
When they were ready to leave, the heroes descended toward Lake Lamora on their magic carpet, heading for Merytol’s Abbey. Without warning, they were hit from above by a Green-Dragon’s dive-attack which ripped the carpet out from under their feet. Luckily, each had a feather fall token to avoid a deadly freefall, but that only made them easy prey for the Dragon as it kept up its flyby attacks until they landed.
The adventurers were scattered when they finally touched ground, with Gilbert locked in combat with the Dragon and only Rosetta close-by enough to run to his aid. She arrived too late to do anything but be knocked out and taken hostage along with the Gnome.
By the time Akram and Nihl reached the scene of the crime, the Dragon was gone, along with their two comrades. Instead, they had to do battle with the Dragon’s minions: an Ettin and its Worg companion. After that, they did their best to track the Dragon but lost the trail and instead made for the ruins of the shattered citadel.
